Chef

A few years ago, when I learned that my first son was allergic to dairy and egg, I eliminated those foods from my diet while breastfeeding.  I am having deja vu, as my second son has the same allergies.  So no more bowls of ice cream or big bites of buttery brownies for me. Fortunately, I have found lots of yummy recipes as alternatives.

But let’s be honest.  Dairy and egg free eating isn’t nearly as decadent as an unlimited diet.  How, then, can a breastfeeding, exhausted, dairy-free, egg-free Mom be decadent?

Go see a movie about food!  And not just in any context, but by yourself, in the middle of the day, when you have a babysitter to watch your kids for a few hours.  It’s well worth the splurge.  Some might find this crazy — if you can’t eat it, why would you want to watch other people cooking and eating it?  Perhaps this explains my love affair with the Food Network.  Something about the creativity of cooking is addictive.

What movie did I choose?  It’s called Chef, starring Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Downey, Jr.  I give it a five-star.  There were some melodramatic, sappy moments, but overall, it was well-acted, and very timely.  Granted, I haven’t seen that many movies in the theater since I became a Mom, but this was by far one of the best that I have seen in awhile.  The characters were endearing.  The food was fun!  And it made me make a mental note that when I am done breastfeeding, I am going to find a yummy Cuban sandwich to eat (even though I’m lactose intolerant and don’t eat pork!  Shh…don’t tell anyone, and please don’t judge me!).

So if you want a fat-free food indulgence, go watch Chef!
